The Pope is not brilliant, saying so is obstructionist and does not speak for me
Been waking up for days thinking about this, how to respond, because this statement from SNAP is being repeated over and over in mainstream news:
“Catholics should be embarrassed to hear their Pope talk again and again about abuse while doing little or nothing to stop it... It is fundamentally disturbing to watch a brilliant man conveniently misdiagnose a horrific scandal”
PLEASE
Think of the victims, who get to see these sycophantic comments repeated again and again in the press, with the quotes attributed as speaking for the victims.
Comments like these from SNAP end up re-victimizing the hundred thousand pedophile priest survivors who have a lot stronger words to say.
Statements like these are obstructionist.
Release of "official statements" like these by SNAP, using all its Public Relations resources to blanket the press, essentially prevents the rest of the victims from getting their stories told. The news media think they are getting the other side of the story by copy and pasting these statements from SNAP.
The "President of SNAP" sounds like she is batting her eyes at the Pope, trying to get his approval, in the statement quoted above.
In fact, BB appears to be in the mesmerized state of a child being raped by a priest in that statement. Or perhaps she has fallen into a state of adoration for the Church, loving it and its hierarchy no matter what the Church does, and so adjusting her own values to compensate-
Loving our perpetrators and acting out in denial is part of a PTSD reaction to the crime.
Please, stop saying SNAP speaks for the victims, if you are going to make statements like the one above about the Pope's Christmas Message.
- Calling the Pope brilliant
- Using words like "disturbed and embarrassed" to describe how we feel about serial felonies that went on for decades and destroyed hundreds of thousands of lives?
The words of SNAP do not even begin to express how victims feel about the Pope and his corporation full of felons.
REPORTERS need to wake up and start doing their job, ask questions, read, search, track down real victims, stop quoting SNAP and saying that by doing so you are getting our side of the story.
Just like the media is failing Americans by not reporting about two wars carried out by the U.S. government, mainstream media are failing us by not going any farther than a SNAP corporate-vetted press release to get the survivors' side of the story.

Revealing Concepts in 1995 Missing Link article
Bishops had "a formal, top-secret plan, to be called 'The Project' to minimize financial loss. It would be funded by the NCCB and composed of various crisis management teams. All fees would be paid by a trial lawyer to prevent victims' attorneys from obtaining hard level evidence that the Project existed."
We need to go back through our own history to figure out what really happened in the pedophile priest discovery. Read this article from September 1995 issue of "The Missing Link," quarterly publication of the Link Up survivor organization, remember them? They rose from grass roots, and THRIVED until founder Tom Economus died and all the files disappeared. Note section about The Project...

The underlined stuff here is from when I first read it in 1995.
We will scan the entire collection of Missing Links here st City of Angels 8 in January 2011, as PippiLeaks will continue.
And as for Christmas, soon we will not have to hear Little Drummer Boy again for at least eight months.

Catholic Priest Sex Crimes spur NY crack addict to rob churches
(From today's NY Daily News:)
The crack-addled burglar accused of robbing nearly a dozen Bronx churches says he broke into the poor box as revenge for the child sex scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church.
"I am angry at the church for molesting children," Nathaniel Linden, 51, told cops who caught him robbing St. Philip Neri Church on the Grand Concourse Sunday.
"That's why I started going after churches. Idon't case them out," he said. "I just walk by and get angry."
Linden waxed theological with detectives looking to link him to other church robberies, according to court papers filed in the Bronx.
"How could (God) let this happen?" he said of the sex abuse scandal that has drawn an extraordinary series of apologies from Pope Benedict. "How can there be a God?"

Re End-of-Year Excuse by Pope for Pedeophile Epidemic in Catholic Church
Benedict now claims we should look at the "context" in which six thousand priests raped a hundred thousand children in the USA, saying, Look at all the crimes against children today, look at the child pornography.
Yes, look at them.
The Catholic Church is responsible for the epidemic of sex crimes against children in the world today, because pedophiles everywhere watched Catholic bishops and monsignors cover up these crimes.
The predators became empowered thanks to the Catholic Church.
"Take responsibility, start making amends, and stop passing the buck," is what I want to say to the Pope. Like the church would ever listen. Or change.
- Sign me, One of hundreds of thousands of damaged people thanks to the pedophile epidemic in the Catholic Church.
(I hate it when the Pope says something I have to pay attention to for this blog, and I'm not going to chase down the quote, it's all over the internet. I'm going back to putting together more PippiLeaks until Dec. 27 when this idiocy in America they call "The Holidays" is finally over.)

L.A. Personnel File battle and new book by Albuquerque victim: 2 sides of the pedophile priest issue
(Same story as posted here last Wednesday with less offensive headline*... I liked the headline but several people said they did not think it was funny....)
“I was in hell and I couldn't tell anyone. Who do you tell that a priest said God wants you to ejaculate with him?”- Albuquerque victim. “Roman Catholic dogma holds that its clergy are representatives of God and Christ on Earth,” defense attorney for pedophile priests.
Two different items that came across my desk Tuesday show the current state of miscommunication between the Catholic Church and thousands of people who came forward as victims of pedophile priests in the past decade. So in this post, City of Angels Blog is running coinciding quotes from the two pieces.First source, yet another document in the Church's ongoing effort to prevent priest personnel files, promised in 510 abuse cases settled in L.A. in 2007, from even being turned over to a mediating judge for possible release to the public. Filed Dec. 1 in L.A. Superior Court, we have quotes from "Declaration of Donald Steier," attorney for L.A. Archdiocese who defends numerous priests in California. Second source is a book published last month, by one victim of one priest in Albuquerque co-written with a local reporter. "Raped: Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy” delivers graphic accounts of Fr. Robert** John Smith's excapades with a teenage boy in New Mexico motel rooms in the 1970s.
Steier [pictured at right] continues to argue that files of priests involved in clergy abuse settlements should not be turned over for public scrutiny, because of specific Catholic beliefs, such as the mystery of Confession. Dioceses around the country use similar arguments for legal secrecy, claiming 1st Amendment religious freedom; in fact, in Connecticut the Church appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to keep personnel files secret, and lost just last year. Still Steier claims:“Every Roman Catholic priest I have represented believed his private communications to the Archbishop or Vicar for Clergy or diocesan counsel would be and remain confidential.” {CofA: If these guys are so godly, and the priests are so innocent, what is the L.A. Archdiocese and Cardinal Roger Mahony really trying to hide in these files?]
Monte and Domrzalski write in Raped: Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy :
"You remember Fr. Smith, my intermediary to God who kept a duffle bag full of porn magazines, a supply of Schlitz Malt Liquor and smokes he gave me, dildos, vibrators, plugs, a blowup sex doll, and pills he gave me to calm my nerves and help me perform. I’ll share with you how he would masturbate, stick his fingers up his ass, and then say Mass and distribute the Holy Eucharist."
Steier repeats the circular argument he’s made in numerous motions filed last two years to prevent release of priest files: that the Catholic Church has to cover its pedophile crimes because secrecy and a special Confessional relationship are part of the Catholic religion. Steier writes that the relationship between a Roman Catholic priest is “Integral to Roman Catholic dogma that holds that its clergy are representatives of God and Christ on Earth.” As a result “Confidential communication from priests to their superiors is required and has been promised to the priests.”
On Page 25 of “Raped” Larry Monte and Dennis Domrzalski write: “Father Robert John Smith was able to ingratiate himself into my family. My parents were devout. They thought priests were God’s representatives and could do no wrong.”
{CofA: I think the crimes of 5700 priests discovered in last ten years in USA pretty much proves Catholic Clergy are not representatives of Christ on Earth, but Church Attorneys still pull this rabbit out of a hat and use it to obstruct the pursuit of truth.]
Most controversial in Steier’s declaration, and why it ended up in my News Alerts, is the Church Attorney’s denouncement of plaintiffs in the L.A. Clergy Cases from 2007, claiming a good half the cases were exaggerated, some totally false, inferring allegations against priests he represents are false, the plaintiffs were con artists who got the idea from reading the SNAP message board. SNAP and Joelle Casteix in Los Angeles held a press event outside Steier’s office Monday to protest remarks Steier makes in the Declaration, quoted here:“In a number of cases, to aid my investigation, I have had accused priest clients take polygraph examinations performed by very experienced former law enforcement experts, including LAPD, the Sheriff Department, and FBI. In many cases the examinations showed my clients’ denial of wrongdoing was ‘truthful,’ and in those cases I offered in writing to the accuser to undergo a similar polygraph examination at my expense.
“In every case the accuser refused to have his veracity tested by that investigative tool, which is routinely used by intelligence agencies. In my investigations of many cases, I have seen the stories of some accusers change significantly over time, sometimes altering years, locations, and what activity was alleged. In every case, the changes seemed to have enabled or enhanced claims against my clients, or drastically increased alleged damages. In several cases my investigation has provided objective information that could not be reconciled with the truthfulness of the subjective allegations.
“In other words, in many cases objective facts showed that accusations were false. One retired FBI agent who worked with me to investigate many claims in the Clergy Cases told me, in his opinion, about ONE-HALF [his emphasis] of the claims made in the Clergy Cases were either entirely false or so greatly exaggerated that the truth would not have supported a prosecutable claim for childhood sexual abuse.
Monte and Domrzalski write about the Johnson victim’s life since the serial rapes:
"You need to know that thirty-eight years later, you people, your Church, your cardinals and your Holy See are still violently raping me and the more than 15,000 * other kids in the United States- who knows how many worldwide- who were sexually abused and raped by your priests over the decades.
"You've been debasing us in that you and your hypocritical organization won’t take responsibility for the monsters you set loose on us boys and girls, savaging us in that you've tried to keep us silent with your money, dehumanizing us with your twisted and laughable claims that you're being persecuted, stomping on our minds in that you have cared more about your image, organization, and pedophile priests than you have about God’s children; and spitting on our souls by covering up crimes and harboring criminals."
Steier goes on with his arguments that the accusations in the L.A. Clergy Cases could have been false:
“I also recall that the U.S. ….” (CofA: Here Steier writes that since DNA testing has proved many sex assault convictions to be wrong, some of those priests could be innocent, not worthy of City of Angels Lady’s fingertip typing efforts, as totally irrelevant).
Steier says because there were no trials, his client priests priests haven’t had their day in court…
[CofA: If half the charges were false, why did Mahony settle 510 cases for $660 million without going to trial on one of them? Was Catholic legal strategy from the beginning a scheme that because there was no trial, there could not be any guilt?]
Steier's says, "I represent the following individual priests whose files are affected by this proceeding" and names his priest clients:
Michael Baker
Kevin Barmasse
Lynn Caffoe (deceased)

Edward Dober

From page one of chapter one of "Raped Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy":
"Dear Holy Father, Your Eminence, Cardinals and Bishops of the Holy See:
"I was fucked by you and your organization, literally- straight up the ass by one of your priests in 1972 when I was fifteen years old. He also gave me blow jobs. As he used to say, he loved to suck cock. I also got to watch your man of God, your successor to the apostles, whack off three or four times a night and spew his cum all over cheap motel rooms.
"Offended by my language? Think it's obscene?
"Well I was offended at being poked by your priest. That was the obscenity."
Steier writes that plaintiffs and lawyers are in it for the money:
“A cottage industry exploded, suing the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, in particular. ‘Victim advocacy’ groups- working solely with plaintiffs’ lawyers in most cases- maintained hotlines and even a website that presented detailed information on named priests, from which plaintiffs could learn of detailed accusations made by others against those priests. A number of my clients were on that list.
“The prospect of a lucrative payoff from the Archdiocese and its insurers certainly affected some accusations. The cases were settled with no trials whatsoever, in a process that excluded those most affected- the accused clergy. In most cases the priests were never named as parties defendant, but the few who were named ALL refused to settle. Thus, there was NO legal process to separate false claims from valid claims.”
From Raped: Memories of an Altar Boy:
“I was fifteen years old- a confused young guy- and this Catholic priest had just masturbated all over the room. He was naked and was strutting around the room. Then he went and plopped his bloated body on the bed and told me to come and lie next to him.”
*****
'The security of these confidential communications by priests in exceptionally important to the continuing functioning of the Roman Catholic Church.'
*********
Steier writes: “I am aware of several plaintiffs who testified that they realized that they had abused only after learning that some other person, sometimes a relative, had received a financial settlement from the Archdiocese or another Catholic institution. I also know that private advocacy groups, such as Survivors’ Network for those abused by Priests [commonly called ‘S.N.A.P.’], are active in supporting victims of sexual abuse. SNAP in particular also aggressively attempt to locate and identify new people who claim to have been victims, and they maintain an interactive Internet website with a ‘forum’ or message board,’ among other features, where people can share detailed information between alleged victims pertaining to identity of specific alleged perpetrators, their alleged ‘modus operandi,’ and other details of alleged molestation.
“In effect, a person who wanted to make a false claim of sexual abuse by a priest could go to that website and find a ‘blueprint’ of factual allegations to make that would coincide with allegations made by other people."
Monte and Domrzalski write in “Raped: Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy”:
“Smith always told me that God wanted me to have these feelings, that God wanted me to smoke and drink malt liquor, and that God wanted me to ejaculate with him. That was 1972, I was fifteen years old…. One of Smith’s favorite things was to measure his load. He’s whack off and cum into a cup or glass and hold it up to his eye and swish it around and exclaim what a great ejaculator he was."
Steier says false memories of pedophile priest rape were “planted” by therapists.
“I am aware that false memories can also be planted or created by various psychological processes, including by therapists who might be characterized as ‘sexual victim advocates,’ if not outright charlatans.
“For example, it is reported that most of the approximately seven hundred psychiatric ‘Certificates of Merit’ filed in these Clergy Cases, as required by Code of Civil Procedure 340.1, were signed by the same therapist.”
More of Monte’s memories:
“I don't even know how I felt except that I was sick and horrified and scared and trembling and ready to throw up. I'm fifteen and there’s a forty-two year old man who’s basically got me locked in a hotel room, masturbating and pretty much ordering me to do the same. There’s this grown man, a man of God, who’s been handed down an appostolic succession, walking around a hotel room masturbating and spewing sperm all over the room and into those white towels.”
Steier argues:
“’Confidential files’ such as those at issue in this proceeding may contain complaints and documentation of ensuing activity, including confidential investigation where needed, regarding such complaints concerning a very wide spectrum of problems. Ecclesiastical complaints about how a priest comports himself, dresses, jokes, sings, grooms himself, or recites religious material appear in many of the confidential files. Other complaints [in personnel files] relate to a priest’s alleged insubordination, laziness, diligence, or friction among the clergy. Private financial information relating to a priest.”
Monte and Domrzalski write of the victim’s life:
“So many times I've asked God to take all this from me. The answer I keep getting back is ‘Give it to the Catholic Church, it is not Me.’ So I'm going to help you with your penance by taking you in those hotel rooms with me and Smith.”
Steier writes: “Some documents relate to suspicions or complaints of inappropriate contact with others, both minors and adults. The files often confidential internal communications to the General Counsel or with the Vicar for General who has the day-to-day responsibility to investigate matters with potential legal consequences for the Archbishop.”
It's at this point in the Declaration that Steier claims, "The security of these confidential communications by priests in exceptionally important to the continuing functioning of the Roman Catholic Church.." and in the Catholic Religion the priest has a unique relationship to his bishop, “which is integral to the Roman Catholic dogma that holds that its clergy are representatives of God and Christ on Earth.”[CofA: What a great set-up to get away with a ton of criminal activity, just claim your are a “representative of God and Christ on Earth.” That gives you free reign to rape children?
From Larry Monte’s memories: “It's too much pain and shame and torment to even comprehend. It's overwhelming. The Catholic Church gave it to me and to all of us, and now [with this book] I am giving all of it back to you.”

City of Angels Lady met Tuesday with Dennis Domrzalski, the former Albuquerque
Tribune reporter who worked with Larry Monte on the book published by Dennis' publishing company, Logan Square Press. Over a Swiss mocha, we encouraged 'Zalski to produce 99,999 more books, documenting the lives of the rest of the victims of pedophile priests in the USA with similar stories to tell.
And, watch here for quotes from "Raped" as we are only up to page 31 of the 243-page book.
Stay tuned.
PS: Here is a quote from another thing I read Tuesday, as I went through old posts, to start making them into something like a book based on City of Angels Blog
"It's at a cellular level.
"When a Catholic priest rapes you at age five and convinces you that this is something special you have that you do- I mean whispering in your ear while lushing all over you- If it’s done at that early an age, it gets into your DNA because your cells are still forming.
"Consenting adults can do whatever they want, but it's NEVER OKAY to force sex on a child, because cells in a growing body are still developing.
"Sex before adulthood damages the victim at a cellular level.
"In my case, even though I wasn’t that stunning, there was something implanted in me, literally, by Father Horne's fingers.
"I spewed pheromones."

We wrote about Steier before
Photo ran here last August
CofA Post here re other efforts by Steier to prevent release of files.
,
"Raped" was reviewed in Albuquerque Alibi Dec. 2
* MORE ON OFFENSIVE HEADLINE: I rewrote the headline but am leaving the old post the way it was. To be honest, if I could draw a cartoon, it would be priest personnel files with cum all over them. That's the image in my head after reading the Steier doc and Monte book on the same day.
I'D LIKE to hear from other readers how they felt about the nasty headline
This is a blog, it captures the moment, and the Church continuing to keep up a facade of innocence has pushed me to this extreme.

Stay tuned.

Raped the Book takes us to Servants of the Paraclete, as priest takes teenage boy victim to Via Coeli to show him off
In Raped: Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy, the co-author, a victim of Fr. Robert John Smith of Albuquerque, describes visits he made with Smith to Servants of the Paraclete, the Jemez Springs rehab center that treated pedophile Catholic clergy. In keeping with tradition at City of Angels Blog, as soon as I find out something new about the pedophile epidemic in the Catholic Church, I post it here. CofA ccelebrates four years of publishing on Jan. 16, 2011.
Quote From the book: The period of time is early 1970s:
Smith, that man of God, once took me up to the Paracletes compound in Jemez Springs. He told me we were visiting one of his friends. I thought it was a retirement home- didn't know that it was a haven for boy-fucking priests. Why would he take a kid there other than to show me off. You talk about leading a lamb to slaughter.
“He went inside to visit his pals and I roamed around the grounds. We were there for a couple of hours…. Why would the people in charge of the place let a kid up there? Will somebody tell me this? What was wrong with those people?"
City of Angels also would like to know why people in the Santa Fe Archdiocese weren't warned about the priests at Servants of the Paraclete, as I'm discovering in my research here. Instead, all the way into the mid-1990s, New Mexico residents thought the priests at Jemez Springs were your usual nice-guy priests just living in permanent retreat.
You can buy Raped: Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy is available at Amazon for about ten dollars. We are only up to page 46, hope to have more quotes and stories about the book soon, and hope to encourage more victims to start telling their stories in detail by reporting about this book.
[No, I'm not getting a commission on sales of Raped that come through CofA Blog, I should have thought of that, but my total lack of business sense is the reason I need a PayPal button. Me and Julian Assange, too busy working on releasing information to set up a corporation, even a nonprofit, dependent on people's urges to just send us money through PayPal to keep going. Is Immaculate Ejaculate in L.A. priest personnel files, as in new book by Albuquerque victim?
[7:05 AM: Before saying you don't like the headline, read the story, as it suits the subject matter. Offensive? I was diddled between the legs by a priest when I was five years old and the Church still claims sovereignty. I'm beyond offense.*]

PHOTO: Jim Robertson Cuffed to Mahony on-altar throne in 2005 L.A. demonstration, EXCLUSIVE at CofA Blog
New friend in Albuquerque is source of this exclusive photo at City of Angels Blog, from the day in September 2005 when Jim Robertson handcuffed himself to Cardinal Roger Mahony's throne-like chair, during a demonstration at the Cathedral in Los Angeles. Below is a sampling of news coverage of the event, which was before City of Angels Lady dropped back onto the planet with a camera. This photo comes by way of two plaintiffs in the L.A. cases, one who lives in Albuquerque, (how those priests did get around). The image she gave me was stuck under the glass cover of a picture frame, so quality is low, I know. Scanned here for posterity at City of Angels BLog.
MAHONY, RESIGN! Security guards attempted to arrest a group of pro-life demonstrators outside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on July 1. The demonstrators, part of the American Life League's 2005 Crusade for Life walks, were protesting a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Roger Mahony for the inauguration of Los Angeles' mayor, Anthony Villaraigosa, a pro-abortion Catholic. "It is an outrage that an event honoring a pro-abortion Catholic public figure that openly supports the killing of the pre-born would occur at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral," said American Life League president Judy Brown. But, she said, "it is even more shameful that Cardinal Mahony and others would attempt to censor faithful Catholic students from proclaiming the truth."
The "censorship" occurred when cathedral security threatened to arrest the dozen or more demonstrators; the Los Angeles police department had to intervene to tell security that arresting the protestors would violate the First Amendment. The demonstrators were then allowed inside the cathedral.
In a press release issued the same day of the protest, Brown called on Cardinal Mahony to resign. "American Life League calls for the immediate resignation of Cardinal Roger Mahony in light of his continued defiance of Church teaching," said Brown. "His coddling of pro-abortion Catholic public figures in California is beyond reproach and should not be tolerated by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church."
ANOTHER PROTESTER did not fare so well as the pro-life demonstra tors. James Robertson of Mount Washington handcuffed himself to the cathedra at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels during the 10 a.m. Mass there on Sunday, June 26, while Cardinal Roger Mahony was delivering the homily. Robertson, 58, who says he was a victim of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the 1960s, later said the cardinal's homily "got me all fired up. My point was to inform parishioners everywhere. To hear victims' stories rather than the cardinal and his spin." Robertson said he had been planning the protest for three weeks.
Security guards surrounded Robertson, and the Mass continued. After Mass was over, about 12 police officers arrested Robertson. According to archdiocesan spokesman Tod Tamberg, archdiocesan officials ordered Robertson's arrest because "we owe it to the people who come to the cathedral and to the Mass. Right away the concern is the safety of Cardinal Mahony and all the people in the cathedral. Does he have the potential to do something else?" Perhaps, but at the time, Robertson was unarmed. He was charged with a misdemeanor, booked, and released after a few hours without bail.
Prosecutors filed misdemeanor charges against Robertson on July 22, the Times reported on the 23rd. Robertson could face up to one-and-a-half years in jail and $2,000 in fines if convicted. Defending the prosecution, Tamberg said, "it's really about making sure that the rights of the people who want to worship are respected." And though, according to the Times, many of the 2,000 worshippers gathered in the cathedral at the time of the incident "seemed oblivious to it," "people in the first few pews," said Tamberg, "knew something was terribly wrong."
"This is supposed to be a church of Christianity," said Steven Sanchez, director of Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, addressing the prosecution. "Whatever happened to forgiveness? Whatever happened to turning the other cheek?" But, said Tamberg, "disrupting a religious service only scares people and does not promote healing
Recorded for posterity at this website one of few that has articles about this incident.
Weird, even the Guardian UK story about Jim's protest has been removed

Michael Moore posting bail for Julian Assange
WikiLeaks exists, in part, because the mainstream media has failed to live up to its responsibility. The corporate owners have decimated newsrooms, making it impossible for good journalists to do their job. There's no time or money anymore for investigative journalism. Simply put, investors don't want those stories exposed. They like their secrets kept ... as secrets.
Yesterday, in the Westminster Magistrates Court in London, the lawyers for WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange presented to the judge a document from me stating that I have put up $20,000 of my own money to help bail Mr. Assange out of jail.
Furthermore, I am publicly offering the assistance of my website, my servers, my domain names and anything else I can do to keep WikiLeaks alive and thriving as it continues its work to expose the crimes that were concocted in secret and carried out in our name and with our tax dollars
I ask you to imagine how much different our world would be if WikiLeaks had existed 10 years ago. [when] Mr. Bush [was] handed a "secret" document on August 6th, 2001. Its heading read: "Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US." And on those pages it said the FBI had discovered "patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings." Mr. Bush decided to ignore it and went fishing for the next four weeks.
But if that document had been leaked, how would you or I have reacted? What would Congress or the FAA have done? Was there not a greater chance that someone, somewhere would have done something if all of us knew about bin Laden's impending attack using hijacked planes?

PippiLeaks: In 1957 letter, Manchester Diocese asks Fitzgerald to help put perp priest John T. Sullivan back in parishes
If you still doubt that Catholic bishops knew, as far back as 1957, that a lot of their priests were pedophiles, and if you doubt the Catholic Church used Servants of the Paraclete as a kind of laundry service for dirty priests, here is a letter from the Bishop of Manchester, New Hampshire, to the New Mexico rehab center, about John T. Sullivan, a priest who liked little girls. In the one page September 23, 1957, letter scanned here click to elarge and read, to Gerald Fitzgerald, Superior General at Via Coeli, Matthew Brady, the Bishop of Manchester, writes for help with errant priest Sullivan.
“His problem is not drink but a series of scandal-causing escapades with young girls.”
At the end of the letter the Bishop of Manchester suggests: “I would hesitate to write to a bishop myself without giving him all the details of the past life of this priest. Perhaps if he went to Via Coeli for a while you might be able and willing to recommend him to some bishop on the grounds of his good conduct there and his promise for the future.”
In 1958 Sullivan perpetrated on at least three girls in Grand Rapids, Michigan, who won settlements as adults in 1993. But the world did not hear about Sullivan’s crimes until 2002, in news stories the $500,000 settlement two women shared in 1993. After those news reports, more women from Grand Rapids, Michigan, came forward with their experience of abuse at the priest’s hands. It makes one wonder how many women who were victims of John T. Sullivan as little girls did not see the news stories, how many of his victims did not even live to adulthood, and most important, how many would not have been raped if the Church back in 1957 had put Sullivan someplace where he would no longer have access to little girls.
Bishop Accountability summarizes John T. Sullivan's career in the database under S:
"Ordained by Manchester but abused girls during assignments in NH, MI, TX, NM & AZ over a period of 35 years. Fatherered a child in 1949 and stalked a nursing student in 1952. Manchester released his personnel file 2/03. Grand Rapids paid 3 sisters $500K in 1994 because of Sullivan. Privileges removed multiple times. Died in 1999."
As City of Angels reads the 1957 letter, the Catholic Church wished to wash Father Sullivan at Via Coeli in New Mexico and return him back into parish work, like another laundered hundred dollar bill.
Here is more from the 1957 letter from the Bishop of Manchester:
“Dear Father Gerald.
“I have in the diocese, what is an old story to you, a problem priest for whom I am at loss to find a place to serve. He is Rev. John T. Sullivan. His problem is not drink, but a series of scandal-causing escapades with young girls. There is no section of the diocese in which he is not known and no pastor seems willing to accept him. He is at present suspended since July 11, 1956. He is 40 years of age and 15 years ordained.
“At times I have considered him insant, diabolically cunning, and again, as at present, sincerely remorseful. The enclosed letter from him is a sample of it.”
[CofA Lady hopes that letter is in the stack I'm going through]
“The solution of his problem seems to be a fresh start in some diocese where he is not known. It occurred to me that you might know of some bishop who would be willing to give him that opportunity. I would hesitate to write to a bishop myself without giving him all the details of the past life of this priest. Perhaps if he went to Via Coeli for a while you might be able and willing to recommend him to some bishop on the grounds of his good conduct there…..”

A Washington Post story about New Hampshire documents made public in 2003 said:
When he learned that one of his priests was preying on teenage girls, Bishop Matthew F. Brady of Manchester, N.H., yanked the man out of ministry. Then he wrote letter after letter -- at least 15 in all -- warning other bishops not to let the priest back into parish work.
Considering how many Roman Catholic bishops have quietly transferred sexual abusers to new parishes, Brady's stand was notable. But what's really startling is the year he took it: 1957.
Brady's letters are among 9,000 pages of documents made public by New Hampshire's attorney general at the end of a grand jury investigation last month.
The correspondence makes clear that sexual abuse by priests did not begin with the "sexual revolution" in American life in the 1960s, as some Catholics have maintained. By the 1950s, the New Hampshire files show, U.S. bishops had a lot of experience with the problem.
But the Brady documents reveal much more. They contain evidence, in confidential messages between bishops, that a shortage of priests sometimes led Catholic officials to accept the calculated risk of keeping sex offenders in ministry.
They also disprove the contention that church leaders were unaware until recently that pedophilia is difficult, if not impossible, to cure. The advice Brady received from the nation's first treatment center for troubled priests, Via Coeli in Jemez Springs, N.M., was that priests who had molested minors were unlikely to change.
Released then was a letter from Fitzgerald to Brady referring, I think to the correspondence scanned in here. Problem is the letter from Brady shows, to me, that the Bishop of Manchester was perfectly fine with the idea of washing the priest through the Servants of the Paraclete center in Jemez Springs and then putting him back in a parish.
Above is from WASHINGTON Post article at Bishop Accountability.

An Arizona Republic story from August 14, 2003 identifies Sullivan as one of “six priests recently named by the Gallup Diocese in New Mexico as sexual predators [who] served in small Arizona towns.”
"Sullivan was in the Gallup Diocese from 1961-69, after several complaints were lodged against him in New Hampshire and Michigan. He worked in the Phoenix Diocese until 1982, when he retired. He died in 1999. He was accused of molesting a 13-year-old girl in 1979 at a church in Bullhead City and pleaded no contest. Allegations also were made by several other girls.[COFA: Must have been when he was with Servants of the Paraclete.]
********
The Gallup Independent reported in August 2005:
John T. Sullivan “served in the Diocese of Gallup for eight years before transferring to the Diocese of Phoenix. The Diocese of Gallup has said that no victim has come forward from this diocese.”
**********
As the 1957 letter scanned here and released at City of Angels Blog today shows, Catholic bishops took a flagrant disregard for the victims of these priests, and wanted to keep the priests in service producing more of those hundred dollar bills. Imagine if John T. Sullivan had been kept on an island someplace like, oh let’s see, Tortola, from 1957 on, how many less damaged women would have been walking around the Earth today.
*************
From 2002 news story on Sullivan:
Gr Diocese Reveals $500,000 Payment in Decades-Old Sexual Abuse Claims
The Money - Paid out in 1994 - Went to 3 Women Who Said a Priest Abused Them When They Were Girls
Grand Rapid Press (Michigan)
April 6, 2002
The Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids acknowledges it paid more than $500,000 in 1994 to three women who were sexually abused as young girls and teens by a Grand Rapids priest.
How many women's lives could have been saved by keeping Father Sullivan in isolation from 1957 onward?

Open Video Letter to Pope re hiding kiddie fiddlers
"Jesus preached love one another, but it seems the priests just want to bugger one another." From video here, Open Letter to the Pope from "a chap who thinks some of the Pope's actions stink":
"The sick stuff some kiddy fiddlers are into, it's like sometimes you're less inclined to find the truth than to hide the abuse under your roof."

PippiLeaks: Fitzgerald Did Not Want to take pedophile priests off the Tortola island enclave
Next Servant of Paraclete Document here at PippiLeaks*: Letter about withdrawal from Tortola, remote island where SOTP once ran a retreat to house pedophile priests as far away from civilization as possible. Upon orders from "ecclesiastical superiors," Gerald Fitzgerald writes in this November 10, 1960, letter to the Bishop of Virgin Islands to begin the process of removing the priests back to New Mexico. We see that the founder of SOTP did not want to give up the island in the Caribbean that was being used to isolate pedophile priests, in the letter from Gerald Fitzgerald to Bishop Edward Happer of Our Lady or Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY, scanned here “re our foundation in your Diocese in the Virgin Islands.”
Before starting closing procedures in Tortola, Fitzgerald writes, “I thought it prudent to consult His Excellency, Archbishop Byrne (of Santa Fe) who soon expressed “his decision that we give up Tortola. This leaves me nothing else to do but to carry out the desires of my ecclesiastical superior and to ask Your Excellency to let me know how you would wish this withdrawal to be made.”
On Page 2 of this letter Fitzgerald holds several doors open to continue having the island run by Servants of the Paraclete even says:“Carrying out this request in this matter is possibly one of the hardest obediences which I have ever been called upon to execute.”
Next quote brings up a “Huh?” from city of angels lady as she reads:
“In doing so” (bringing pedophiles back to the mainland States), “I can find consolation only by echoing the words of our Divine Master: ‘Father not my will but Thine be done.’”
So Father Fitzgerald felt that returning pedophiles to the mainland made him as much a martyr as Christ? Or was as evil as killing Christ?
Hmm.

Nobel Peace Prize for Julian Assange, suggests Russia, City of Angels and PippiLeaks agree
Assange is "Man of Year" in Naples Nativity sculpture:

Russia has suggested that Julian Assange should be awarded the Nobel peace prize, in an unexpected show of support from Moscow for the jailed WikiLeaks founder. In what appears to be a calculated dig at the US, the Kremlin urged non-governmental organisations to think...
"Public and non-governmental organisations should think of how to help him," the source from inside president Dmitry Medvedev's office told Russian news agencies. Speaking in Brussels, where Medvedev was attending a Russia-EU summit yesterday , the source went on: "Maybe, nominate him as a Nobel Prize laureate."
(Read this story and coverage of Assange and WikiLeaks at the Guardian UK.)
Re Nativity: Photo credit Reuters who reported:
(Reuters) - Wikileaks founder Julian Assange may be alone in jail in London, but in the traditional Neapolitan Christmas creches he is in good company -- with Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
Assange, who is depicted holding his trusty lap top, was created by Gennaro Di Virgilio, who each year chooses at least one contemporary character to sculpt and place near the scenes of the traditional story of Jesus' birth in a manger.

PippiLeaks: Jason Sigler letters show bishops did not even know how predator priest ended up in Via Coeli, let alone how to handle him
The “original intention” was to send Jason Sigler back to Canada," says letter from Diocese of Lansing at left from March 5, 1970. However, “Father Sigler asked if it would be possible to search out another solution…."Thereupon I contacted Bishop Gumbleton of Detroit who said that he would take Father Sigler for the present providing that he would obtain psychiatric help."
This is entry four in the PippiLeaks project filed today Dec. 9, 2010. Earlier we posted Depo-Provera Program for Sexual Offender Priests re Servants of the Paraclete, plus Minutes of Monthly Psychiatric Meeting and 1956 fundraiser from Fitzgerald round out today's additions.
City of Angels Blog invites church insiders to leak documents here, re the pedophile epidemic in the Catholic Church, in the same spirit as WikiLeaks. In July 2010, Jason Sigler lost a request for parole, but observers say Sigler may be released from prison in Michigan in December 2011, Read about Sigler in the database at Bishop Accountability under S.
In Canada, there had been “a report that Father Sigler had become involved in some homosexual activity in the parish” (Note: Homosexual Activity was the term for pedophile activity in the early seventies Catholic Church). “Bishop Zaleski found it necessary to ask Father Sigler to leave.”
The letter from Lansing to the Archbishop of Winnipeg goes on to say, “I am sure Father Sigler would agree to any recommendations offered him since hie is very definitely committed to the priesthood.”
***
At Left, how the Archbisohp of Winnipeg responded April 22, 1970:FROM WINNIPEG
On September 10, 1968, Father Sigler “with the approbation of Cardinal Flahiff, was accepted into the Diocese of Lansing 'ad experimentum' for a period of three years and if everything went well, he would then have been incardinated into the Diocese.”
Sigler “had left Lansing and returned to Detroit because of a ‘problem’ (underlined in letter). No further communication took place until your kind letter of March 31.
“We would not wish Father Sigler to be disturbed unnecessarily, but His Eminence asks if you could let me know how Father Sigler came to Via Coeli.... Was he sent by Bishop Gumbleton or by the Diocese of Lansing, or did he come of his own volition?”
***
At left: From Servants of the Paraclete to Archbishop of Winnipeg, January 21, 1971“According to the report of the psychiatrist, Father Jason Sigler should be ready to return to active duty at the end of February of this year.”
THERE'S MORE

From McNamara to Sanchez October 4, 1978
Since he is doing so well in our program, “Would it be possible for Fr. Sigler to accept weekend and supply ministry in the Archdiocese?”
THERE's MORE:
From Archbishop Robert Sanchez of Santa Fe to Servants of the Paraclete October 25, 1978, at left:“I have no objections to Father Sigler assisting parishes of the Archdiocese which request his assistance for weekend and supply ministry. For this purpose I herein grant faculties to him.”

(COfA: Is the letter at the top the same one referred to here, re Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, defendant in a Michigan pedophile priest case?)
In November, an appeals court panel also ruled against Patrick Antos, who filed a claim for damages against former priest Jason Sigler, who is serving a 7-year prison sentence in Michigan for abuse dating back to the 1960s and 1970s. Antos' lawsuit said church officials in Lansing, Detroit and New Mexico knew about Sigler's abuse of boys, and shuffled him between parishes At the time of his lawsuit, Antos was in prison in Utah and said Sigler molested him in a Flushing parish in the mid-1970s.
Antos' lawsuit also named Gumbleton as a defendant, saying there was a letter that suggested Gumbleton, as an auxiliary bishop in the Detroit archdiocese in the late 1960s, conspired to conceal Sigler's predatory behavior. Gumbleton Wednesday said he did not handle dealings with Sigler.Sigler was one of the few priests or former priests convicted for long-ago abuse, in cases in both Wayne and Genesee County. That's because of a legal loophole, allowing prosecution of people who move out of Michigan before the statute of limitations expired.
